Muraguri Dennis
Dennis Muraguri (b. 1980, Naivasha) is a celebrated Nairobi-based multimedia artist renowned for his vibrant explorations of urban life. A graduate of Buru Buru Institute and a long-time resident of Kuona Trust, Muraguri transforms recycled wood and metal into compelling sculptures that critique industrialization.
His iconic, matatu-inspired work has cemented his status as one of Kenya’s foremost artists, turning reclaimed materials into profound cultural commentary.
Borrusia - Oromats Sacco
In Borussia Dortmund – Oromats Sacco, Muraguri documents how matatu crews adopt the iconic black and yellow crest of the German football club as a badge of identity and pride.
The woodcut print faithfully records the streets, where Saccos align themselves with football culture to signal ambition, loyalty, and camaraderie.
As with all his work, Muraguri serves as an archivist of Nairobi’s matatu culture, preserving its visual language exactly as it exists.

Dexter - Umo Inner Sacco
In Dexter -Umo Inner Sacco, Muraguri immortalizes this beloved cartoon figure as a mascot for the Sacco, recognizing how crews weaponize nostalgia and pop culture to broadcast their own intelligence, precision, and dominance on Nairobi’s roads.
The woodcut print thus becomes a love letter to a shared childhood memory and a document of how urban communities build identity by reimagining familiar icons as symbols of local pride and resilience.

Astronaut - Rongao Sacco, 2022
Dennis Muraguri’s Astronaut – Rongai Sacco captures a striking paradox at the heart of Nairobi’s matatu culture: a vehicle adorned with the figure of a Special Police Agent in combat gear alongside fighter jets, imagery of state power and militarized control, yet mobilized by a community that exists in constant negotiation with that very authority.
The woodcut print offers no commentary, only documentation; it preserves the complex language crews use to navigate a city where visibility invites both respect and scrutiny.
In this work, Muraguri holds a mirror to the streets, inviting viewers to sit with the tension of a people who adorn their
livelihoods with the symbols of the forces they must outmaneuver every day.
